Twitter Feed Used for CA Fire Emergency Alerts. Where is Text Message Emergency Network?

Google Blogoscoped highlights KBPS’s use of Twitter in providing civil emergency information. I am curious why no one has harnessed the power and ubiquity of text messaging and the cell network for a standing emergency alert system.

I am currently flying into LA and San Diego for a week in the heart of these fires. I will be subscribed to the Tweeter feed and have it piped to my cell.

    Getting Closer to My Readers

I want to know more about my readers. What do you read? What do you find interesting? Who are you?

So, here is my thought–send [wmrice AT gmail DOT com] me or do the following:

    • If you use Google Reader send me your share link. Here is mine
    • If you don’t use Google Reader make sure I have your blog RSS feed
    • If you don’t have either email me interesting stuff
    • If you use Twitter follow me so I can follow you
    • If you use LinkedIN, invite me to connect

It will be more interesting if we create a two-way conversation.

Connecting Unusual Dots in Your Feed Reader

This is the second time in a couple of weeks that I have noticed treads of significant issues showing in my increasingly International perspective RSS feed reader that are not appearing in the US press I typically read: NY Times, Washington Post, LA Times, Washington Times, NY Post, Wall Street Journal, memeorandum.

The first was a tingle I got in reading an Al-Jazeera post about the Iraqi President’s trip to Syria, but that turned to a cold chill when Dave Winer highlighted the full feeling.

Then last night I got this from my Digg “Banking” feed: “ING Investment Bank Warns Investors of Israeli Strike on Iran.” Notice only 11 Diggs–not near enough to put it above any fold, but it got into my reader!

This made me remember this post I read on Sunday from Joel Rosenberg’s feed: “DISPATCH FROM JERUSALEM: Bush speech seen as preparing for war with Iran” that included this ominous quote from his interview with Benjamin Netanyahu:

I asked Netanyahu how much time the West has to stop Ahmadinejad. “Not much,” he said, noting that when he was Prime Minister both India and Pakistan tested nuclear weapons to the shock of all Western intelligence agencies and that Iran could be much closer to getting the Bomb than anyone realizes. “Nothing else matters – not Iraq, not the peace process with the Palestinians – if Iran is allowed to obtain nuclear weapons. They must be stopped.”

I think this one is particularly interesting in that these are two very different circles of information potentially reaching very obvious conclusions about a very significant future World event without a “top fold” article in any of the US national press. You can find it at the International Herald.

    Lesson: diversify your feeds!

My Phone Stopped Ringing and 5 Other Sales Surprises

Have you noticed that your inbound call center is slowly transforming into an outbound center? Are you ready? Do you have the tools and architecture to be successful?

The first obvious question is why is this paradigm shift occurring? The short answer is that consumers are shifting their increasingly limited attention to the Internet and advertising/marketing is following them. This is causing some unique problems and challenges for your sales force. Here are the surprises:

    • My phone stopped ringing and now I am getting leads, prospects that expect me to follow-up with them
    • I can’t make sure my sales and customer service is being responsive by abandonment rate
    • My prospect may not have the intent to buy immediately
    • My prospect may not be available on my first call or call me back
    • My prospect has multiple competitive options
    • The worst performer are probably getting most of my new prospects/leads

How do I address the change?

    • Realize my inbound call center has become an outbound call center
    • Learn to manage and allocate leads (data) instead of phone calls–telephony and CRM solutions are not the answer
    • Learn to cultivate and nurture an extended sales cycle without additional overhead on your sales force
    • Be able to manage making the 5+ calls it takes to turn a prospect into a customer
    • Make sure you are communicating with the prospect faster and more frequently than your competitor (most only make one call so your odds can be very good)
    • Use a performance-based pull system to allocate/distribute leads

Direct mail and broadcast (TV, radio) media, which creates inbound sales is shifting to Internet advertising, which is creating outbound sales. Don’t let your sales force be surprised.

    Aggregating Your Attention

Rex has a great concept here. The blend of Attention and blogging.

This gives Rex’s client’s, his viewers and readers, a couple of important things: information (probably how they originally got there), context (provides clues to the validity and credibility of the information), and identity (authenticates the identity of the writer). The weaving together of these three concepts significantly increases the value of Rex’s site and the information it provides. Of course, none of this discounts the value of the opportunity to learn about something you may also be interested in if you were exposed.

This is the value of sharing attention data within like communities, which would be more efficient than this broadcast approach.

I wonder how much work goes into creating and maintaining this concept?
